All about our town

The royal palace and the regional museum are only a few minutes’ walk away. There you can feel the history of the region come to life. Other attractive destinations nearby include the Westphalian Open-Air Museum and the Archaeological Museum. Then there are the highlights of the arts scene, like Germany’s biggest touring company: the Landestheater Detmold, along with the Academy of Music, which puts on a number of concerts. The region’s most famous landmark is the Hermann Monument, nestling in the Teutoburg Forest. Not far away are the Externsteine rock formations, a unique natural monument with a past surrounded by myths. Another attraction is the MARTa museum of art in Herford, designed by Frank Gehry. The natural world awaits you at the Heiligenkirchen Bird Reserve, with more than 1,200 native and exotic species. Visitors to the Berlebeck Eagle Sanctuary never fail to be awed by these magnificent birds as they circle overhead.

Berlebeck Eagle Sanctuary

The oldest and most diverse raptor sanctuary in Europe, with more than 180 birds of prey both large and small from 48 different species. During its opening period from March to November the sanctuary offers free flight displays, a terrace with a panoramic view, and other visitor attractions. The Externsteine rock formations have fascinated visitors from all over Germany for years. Nowhere else in the world is there a group of limestone columns like this. Come and marvel at this unique natural monument and take advantage of the well developed network of trails for a walk or a short hike.

Royal Palace

Detmold’s Royal Palace is a sixteenth century Weser Renaissance building. Its historic furnishings give an unforgettable glimpse into the past. The baroque Gobelin tapestries of Alexander, the display of hunting weapons and the porcelain collection are particularly recommended. Open all year round.

Hermann Monument


The Hermann Monument is famous far beyond the borders of Lippe. Visit the monument which commemorates Arminius, the chieftain who defeated the Romans under their commander, Varus, at the famous battle in the Teutoburg Forest in the year 9 AD.

Lippe Regional Museum

The Lippe Regional Museum is the biggest museum in East Westphalia-Lippe with 5,000 square metres of exhibition space. It has six sections containing unique exhibits on themes ranging from nature study to regional and cultural history, folklore, prehistory and early history, ethnology, furniture and interior design. Open all year round.

LWL Detmold Open-Air Museum


From April to October the LWL Open-Air Museum, Westphalia’s Regional Museum of Ethnology offers a detailed view of five centuries of life in the region. Come and see history brought to life in more than 100 almost completely rebuilt historic houses along with landscapes and animals at Germany’s biggest open-air museum on a 100-hectare site. The Tourist Information Centre offers various guided tours of beautiful Detmold for groups on the following themes:

    Schloss Brake

    The Weser Renaissance Museum housed in Schloss Brake in Lemgo offers a view of the art and culture of the Renaissance period (around 1520-1630) in the Weser region.

    As well as the museum and the magnificent castle complex, the idyllic green areas are an ideal place to relax and stroll.

    Heiligenkirchen Bird Reserve and Floral Park

    A well-tended park vibrant with colourful flowers and an impressive number of more than 1,200 birds from 300 species enable the visitor to experience the world of these remarkable animal species.
